Notion 5 from PreSonus is notation software that provides an easy-to-use interface, excellent playback, and wide compatibility. Workflow is efficient since there is no need to deal with endless levels of menus to find a particular function. For playback the software offers orchestral samples recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, with guitar samples from Neil Zaza, bass samples from Victor Wooten and drum samples recorded by Roy "Futureman" Wooten.
Notion also allows you to create a score on a desktop and transfer it to an iPad, where you can continue to edit and playback your music. Native 64-bit support (Mac OS X and Windows) takes advantage of the computer's ability to address more than 4GB of RAM, increasing the speed and performance of Notion as well as VST sample libraries (Notion will function in 32-bit on a 64-bit computer for compatibility with other products). The software also supports ReWire in a host and slave configuration.
Note entry can be achieved with the interactive fretboard, keyboard, or drum pad and many users find it convenient to first capture their pitches or guitar fingerings on an instrument before translating them into notation or tablature. The chord library makes it simple to enter the chord name or voicing into your score. Choose from standard chord symbols and fretted chord symbols and design custom chord symbols and diagrams.
Sequencer Overlay is a feature that allows you to see both notation and its MIDI performance on the same staff. You can edit each individual note's velocity, duration, start-point and end point by simply clicking and dragging functions. MIDI Overdub allows you to overdub your recordings in either merge or replace mode, giving you full control over the resulting performance. MIDI Record/Input allows for choosing keyboard or guitar entry and Notion will follow your playing.
Film, video, and TV composers have specialized needs, and to that end the software's video window includes a new Timecode view, allows for adding hit points, and selecting the volume, frame rate, and project start time. It also handles most of the current video formats, including MP4, WMV (Windows only), H.264, MPEG, MOV, AVI, M4V, and 3GP on Mac and Windows. Notion can handle video while in 32-bit or native 64-bit mode and handles video natively on 64-bit Windows.
