Walnut has long been a favorite material of furniture makers for it's beauty and durability, and it's naturally EQ'd character has been praised by drummers the world over in both stage and studio - with a booming low end and articulate attack to cut through any mix. Bearing Edge The shape of the bearing edge is a key part of a drum's sound, as vibration from hitting a drum transfers to the shell via the contact point between the head and the shell. TAMA's STAR drums feature a bearing edge that is rounder than their traditional bearing edge. The rounded edge achieves greater contact between the drumhead and shell, allowing more efficient transferal of vibration from the head to the shell. Contact between the shell and head is maximized thanks to the bearing edge's peak position of 3.5mm from the shell's outer surface. Hold-Tight Washers Hold Tight washers are designed to prevent the tension rods from loosening. They consist of a cup-shaped stainless steel washer which contains a rubber ring. Vibration caused from striking a drum creates space between tension rods and hoops, which can cause the tension rods to loosen over time. The rubber rings on our Hold Tight washers help absorb the impact of vibration and keeps tension rods in constant contact with the hoops to prevent loosening. Designed to prevent the tension rods from coming loose, Hold Tight washers consist of cup-shaped stainless steel containing a rubber ring. Striking a drum creates a vibration that results in a gap between tension rods and hoops, which can cause the tension rods to loosen over time. The Hold Tight Washer's rubber rings assist with absorb the impact of vibration, keeping the tension rods in constant contact with the hoops, preventing them from coming loose. Kick Drum Spurs The STAR kick drum spurs are designed with soft, high-mass rubber feet to assist with properly absorbing the horizontal impact from the kick pedal striking the drum - this is crucial to the natural resonance and comfortable playing feel of a kick drum shell and pedal. STAR kick drum spurs also feature a cutting-edge 2-piece construction - the spike is separated from the rest of the spur by rubber, absorbing impact without transferring it into the spike itself. This allows the kick drum to resonate freely. Minimum Shell Contact With an elegant and sophisticated look, the newly designed lugs on STAR drums feature an incredibly low-mass bridge construction for minimum contact with the shell. The claw hooks on the kick drum follow suit by floating on the surface if the kick drum hoops.
