Maple Shells - STAR Drum Constructed from one of the world's most widely-used and traditional drum shell materials, STAR Maple drums boast a number of unique and distinct hidden features, putting it far ahead of the pack. With ultra-thin, 5-ply, 5mm shells constructed from a 2mm solid wood core ply, wedged between 1.5mm thick cross-laminated plies on either side, STAR Maple shells share the bright and open attributes of traditional Maple shells - while offering superior dynamics, body, and warmth. TAMA's unique construction method allows for very thin shells compared to traditional drum shells, a cutting-edge design that gives STAR Maples the bright, natural tone of Maple, with the lush tonal character of solid shell drums - combining to deliver a truly outstanding, and unique drum shell. Hold Tight Washers Designed to stop the tension rods from coming loose, Hold Tight washers consist of a cup-shaped stainless steel washer with a rubber ring. Striking a drum causes vibrations which creates space between the tension rods and hoops, and over time, this can cause the tension rods to gradually loosen. Thanks to the rubber rings, TAMA Hold Tight washers help absorb the impact of vibration, maintaining constant contact between the tension rods and the hoops to prevent loosening. Die-Cast Hoops Crucial to a drum's sound and ease of tuning, the die-cast zinc hoops featured on STAR drums are manufactured by injecting molten metal into molds. Die-cast hoops are more dense and more consistent in shape than triple-flanged hoops, which are manufactured by bending metal plates. Pairing beautifully with STAR's lush, resonant drum shells for a incredibly balanced and full-bodied sound, the die-cast hoops offer a crisp attack, outstanding power, and a focused and commanding tone. Die-cast hoops also allow for easier tuning, with greater tuning integrity, thanks to their density and construction consistency. Minimum Shell Contact Each piece of hardware attached to a drum shell informs the resonance and tone of the kit. When developing the STAR drum series, each detail was painstakingly analyzed to optimize sound and offer superior resonance. Featuring newly designed lugs, STAR drums boast a classy, sophisticated aesthetic, with an extremely low mass bridge construction that minimizes shell contact. Following the same design principal, the kick drum claw hooks float on the surface of the kick drum hoops. The small wooden air hole grommet featured on STAR drums further reduces the weight of the shell, while greatly improving the resonance and tone. Kick Drum Spurs Employing the same design concept of the floor tom legs, STAR kick drum spurs were designed with soft, high-mass rubber feet, to absorb the horizontal impact that occurs when the pedal strikes the kick drum. Effectively absorbing this impact is crucial to the natural resonance of the kick drum and comfortable kick pedal performance. To prevent slippage while performing, many kick drum spurs employ metal feet - an critical inclusion for a great deal of drummers - STAR kick drum spurs boast a unique 2-piece design to offer the same impact absorption with the use of metal spikes. Quick-Lock Tom Brackets Offering some very unique, cutting-edge features, the Super Resonant Mounting System and STAR floor toms feature Quick-Lock tom brackets, which offer streamlined setup and effortless breakdown. Thanks to the unique design of these brackets, once the drum is placed on a tom stand or a floor tom, there is no need to attach and adjust separate memory locks to save the setting. The bracket can be separated into two parts by simply sliding the switch on the tom bracket. When the drum is removed for pack-up, the memory lock section remains on the tom stand or floor tom leg, saving your positioning for quick and effortless setup every time. Boasting additional acoustic characteristics, the Quick-Lock tom brackets reduce the transferal of resonance from the drums into the tom stands or floor tom legs thanks to the featured rubber lining which offers further isolation of the shells for greater resonance. Super Resonant Mounting System  Toms should be mounted with minimal stress and strain on the shells and hoops to maximize the natural resonance of the shells, and to achieve this goal, STAR drums employ TAMA's all-new mounting design, the Super Resonant Mounting System. Making three points of contact with the shell to create the largest possible theoretical triangle on the drum - two on the batter hoop to support the vertical weight of the drum, and one on the bottom hoop to support the horizontal weight once the angle is set - and in combination with the support arm, offers greatly reduced stress and strain on the shell and hoop for greater natural resonance. This mounting system operates slightly differently for those few drummers looking to tilt their drums beyond a certain angle. When the drum is tilted beyond a certain angle, the bottom hoop can no longer make contact with, or be supported by the bottom contact point. In this instance, an alternate contact point on the batter hoop is utilized. Although the triangle that these three points create is far smaller, the angle of the drum reduces strain on the batter hoop, preserving the natural resonance and tone of the shell. To achieve superior shell resonance, it's critical to prevent vibration transferal from the shells into the tom stands, so in addition to the Super Resonant Mounting System, each contact point between the shell and the mounting system features rubber components which offer greater shell isolation. Inside Finish The bearing edges and Maple interior of all STAR Maple drum shells have been painstakingly hand-finished with oil - a very time consuming process that gives these drums a classy and sophisticated aesthetic edge. Bearing Edges The shape of the bearing edge is one of the most important factors in a drum's tone - when a drum is struck, the resulting vibration transfers into the shell via the contact point between the drum head and the shell. With a rounder peak than the bearing edges traditionally featured on TAMA drums, STAR drums offer greater contact between the drum head and shell, resulting in more efficient vibration transfer into the shell. With a peak position of the edge 3.5mm from the shell's outer surface, the contact between the drum head and bearing shell is improved further.
