Throughout John Petrucci's long and illustrious career, one thing has remained consistent: the DiMarzio pickups in his guitars. Petrucci has been pushing the limits of progressive metal since the late 80's, and the new DiMarzio Crunch Lab bridge model is the result of the most recent collaboration between Petrucci and DiMarzio. It was used throughout the creation of Black Clouds & Silver Linings, Dream Theater's tenth studio record. John is sure that this is the greatest live and studio sound he's ever had, and the name says everything - crunch is what it's all about, with a huge, tight sound that doesn't get muddy or harsh. While the Crunch Lab's physical appearance is identical to the D Sonic, the Crunch Lab's internal design is unique, and is great for what it doesn't do - it' s not about high-gain, it's not about huge monstrous lows. It's louder and the highs have more dimension. The low and mid frequencies are open, which is imperative for achieving full-bodied chords and presence when playing through a high-gain amplifier. The voicing of the pickup is unique to the point that Petrucci prefers to have the Crunch Lab installed in almost all of his guitars, with the solid bar toward the neck, irrespective of the guitar's tuning.
