Dynamic double-band microphones are unique in sound, manufacturing technology, and history. A special feature of the M 160 is its directional characteristic. Thanks to its high cardioid characteristic, unusual for a ribbon mic, the M 160 reduces background noise by 25 dB at 110° and picks up less sound from behind, making it less susceptible to ambient noise. This makes it particularly suitable for the studio as well as the stage. The M 160 can be used as an M/S microphone in conjunction with the double ribbon microphone M 130 (directional pattern 8). The manufacturing process of the M160 is so complex that the microphone has been handcrafted since 1957 by a small team of employees at beyerdynamic in Heilbronn. In 2019, the M 160 was inducted into the NAMM TEC Awards Technology Hall of Fame.
